RM, the leader of BTS, has taken another meaningful step beyond the boundaries of music and into the art world. This October, his first personal collection exhibition, 『RM X SFMOMA』, has finally opened at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). In a first for a K-pop artist, he is collaborating with the world-renowned museum, unveiling his private collection and participating as a co-curator. Let's delve into this special exhibition to see what new dialogue he, who has comforted the world through music, is now offering through art.
This exhibition is a long-term project, running from October 2026 to February 2027 at SFMOMA. The fact that this is the museum's first-ever collaboration with a K-pop artist since its founding is significant in itself. It is a symbolic event that clearly shows RM's personal influence has expanded beyond his fanbase, establishing him as an icon recognized by the global art and culture scene. Each step he takes is writing a new history for K-culture.
RM has described the core of this exhibition as a "reflection that crosses boundaries." He shared a profound message, stating, "We live in an era defined by boundaries. I hope this exhibition becomes a place to reflect on the boundaries between East and West, Korea and the US, modern and contemporary, and the personal and the universal." As he said, the exhibition creates a new dialogue by placing about 200 pieces—from his personal collection and SFMOMA's holdings—in the same space. For example, a work by the master of Korean abstract art, Yun Hyong-keun, is placed right next to a piece by the American neo-expressionist Philip Guston. Through this, visitors can experience the universal resonance that art delivers, transcending nationality and time.
A major draw of this exhibition is the opportunity to witness the discerning eye of RM, who is well-known as an art enthusiast. His collection spans a wide range, from works by masters of Korean modern art to paintings and sculptures by renowned artists from around the world. What makes it even more exciting is that a significant number of these works are being unveiled to the public for the very first time. Janet Bishop, a chief curator at SFMOMA, expressed strong confidence in his taste and the exhibition's quality, stating, "Visitors will have an unprecedented artistic experience through RM's beautiful and contemplative collection."
RM's love for art is not a recent development. He has long played a significant role in increasing public interest in art by consistently visiting museums in Korea and abroad and sharing works on his social media. His visits have become so influential that they've even coined the term "RM Art Tour." This exhibition is his first official stage to stand before the public not merely as an admirer, but as a "cultural curator" with his own philosophy and aesthetic. It's a must-see to understand how his intellectual curiosity and artistic sensibility—spanning music, literature, philosophy, and now art—have been brought to life in a single exhibition.
『RM X SFMOMA』 is not just an exhibition of a K-pop star's collection. It is a profound window into the inner world of an artist named RM, and a sturdy bridge that breaks down the boundaries between art and pop culture, East and West. The start of this meaningful dialogue in San Francisco is incredibly exciting, and we look forward to seeing the new inspiration and resonance it will bring to visitors from all over the world.
