If you missed the premiere of Brave New World (멋진 신세계), you missed one of the most chaotic and entertaining K-drama debuts of the year. Lim Ji-yeon is back, but forget her "The Glory" persona—this time, she is a Joseon-era villainess who finds herself trapped in the body of a struggling actress in 2026.
The show started strong with a 5.4 percent rating, blending historical epic vibes with a modern romantic comedy twist. Here is why everyone is talking about Episode 1.
📌 Quick Episode Guide
The opening was grand and cinematic. Kang Dan-sim, the most hated woman in the Joseon Dynasty, drinks poison and dies under a lunar eclipse. But instead of the afterlife, she wakes up on a modern-day filming set as Shin Seo-ri (Lim Ji-yeon), an unknown actress.
The transition from a regal villainess to a confused modern woman was acting perfection. When she hears people at a museum mocking her historical legacy as a "vile woman," it triggers a fierce survival instinct. She decides that if the world sees her as an evil queen, she might as well live like one in this new world.
Enter Cha Se-gye (Heo Nam-jun), the chaebol bad boy and "capitalist monster." He is rich, rude, and spends his free time clicking "dislike" on hate comments about himself. Their first meeting was anything but romantic.
After a misunderstanding on the road, Seo-ri treats him like a lowly peasant who dared to insult her. What followed was a legendary "Palm Leaf Battle." Seo-ri whipped him with a giant palm leaf while Se-gye retaliated with a bouquet of flowers. This scene is already a viral meme, establishing them as the "Enemies-to-Lovers" couple we didn't know we needed.
| Character | Actor | Role in Episode 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Shin Seo-ri | Lim Ji-yeon | A Joseon villainess transmigrated into a modern actress. Fierce and funny. |
| Cha Se-gye | Heo Nam-jun | A cold-hearted chaebol heir with a surprisingly petty side. |
| Yoon Ji-hyo | Lee Se-hee | A top star and Seo-ri's future rival. High-status and glamorous. |
One of the most poignant moments in Episode 1 was when Seo-ri felt rain for the first time in 300 years. She realizes that being cold and wet is a sign of being alive. "I survived," she whispers, vowing to live this new life as a reward.
She quickly identifies Se-gye as a "man of power" and decides to use him as her "spear and shield." Her Joseon instincts tell her that his life is in danger, setting up a thrilling mystery. As a red-tailed star appears in the sky during another lunar eclipse, it is clear their destinies are tied together by more than just a car accident.
The ending of Episode 1 gave us total goosebumps. As a mannequin falls from the sky, Seo-ri leaps to save Se-gye, and he instinctively pulls her into his arms to protect her. The slow-motion close-up of their gaze was the perfect way to end the premiere.
Despite their constant bickering, that split-second survival instinct proved there is an underlying chemistry that is going to be explosive.
🔹 Lim Ji-yeon’s comedic timing is a refreshing change of pace and a huge success.
🔹 Heo Nam-jun’s "villain-but-cute" chaebol character is winning over fans.
🔹 The cinematography during the lunar eclipse scenes feels like a high-budget movie.
